Relatives of mine were heavily involved in the Philippines campaigns in World War II - both the initial defeat and subsequent liberation. I heard of many of the events in this book but never in such rich detail, and about a man that actually lived them. The writing style provides a second hand account that reads like a first hand personal narrative. Highly recommended, both for those with prior interest in the Philippines and for those who enjoy a good storry well told. I have been reading books that tell the stories of our WWII veterans. This book was written by the son-in-law of the central character, who was a Navy medic who worked with a PBY squadron. He tells the story in third-person(?), but the central character speaks as if it was a narrative. I find it hard to put down (haven't finished it yet - enjoy reading portions daily), but I have gotten to the point that I look forward to each reading. Hope I can find others like this. He starts by telling of his life on an Indiana farm as the depression is on the land, then decides on enlisting in order to get off the farm, and also to help the family. The man meets every day as an adventure and seeks to better himself by trying to learn something new each day , on and off duty. I'm happy I found this book!
